Structural interfaces & Metamaterials

We have invented the concept of structural interface, a discrete structure joining continuous media. We have found for this model new and unchallenged mechanical properties in the static and dynamic ranges.

For the first time, we have proven the strong influence of prestress on photonic/phononic band gaps in elastic structures. We have discovered that prestress ‘shifts’ band gaps toward higher (lower) frequencies for tensile (compressive) prestress and may ‘annihilate’ certain band gaps in defected structures.

We have shown that using a structural interface we may obtain focussing of elastic waves through negative refraction effects.
